Learn the difference between bird grit and bird sand, how each supports digestion and hygiene, and which option suits your cage or aviary setup.
Quick answer
Choose bird grit for digestion support and bird sand for hygiene and comfort. Many keepers use both, but the right choice depends on your bird's species, housing, and whether grit is already in their diet.
Why grit and sand serve different purposes
Grit and sand are often mentioned together, but they do different jobs. Grit is a digestion aid: birds store it in their gizzard to grind seeds and other food because they have no teeth. Sand, on the other hand, is primarily a bedding or floor covering that absorbs droppings and moisture, keeps the enclosure clean, and gives birds a natural surface to scratch on.
Some commercial products combine both functions, but most keepers find it clearer to buy separate products and offer them in different trays or areas.
When grit is essential
Seed-eating birds such as budgies, canaries, finches, and cockatiels need grit to break down whole seeds. If your bird's diet is mostly pellets or soft foods, grit may be less critical, but offering it still allows natural foraging behaviour.
Grit comes in two main types: insoluble (flint or granite) and soluble (oyster shell or cuttlebone). Insoluble grit stays in the gizzard and grinds food; soluble grit provides calcium and is slowly absorbed. Small birds like finches need finer particles, while larger birds like parrots need coarser grit.
When sand is the better choice
Sand is primarily a floor substrate. It is easy to clean, reduces odour, and lets birds exhibit natural dust-bathing and foraging behaviours. It works well in aviaries, flight cages, or any setup where the bird spends time on the ground.
Sand does not aid digestion. If you use sand as the main substrate, you still need a separate grit dish. The exception is some commercial sands that contain crushed grit, but the proportions vary, so reading the label is important.
Trade-offs to consider
Grit must be refreshed regularly because it becomes coated with food residue and loses its grinding efficiency. Sand needs complete replacement when soiled, which can be more frequent in small cages than in large aviaries.
Cost is another factor: sand is generally cheaper per kilogram than grit, but you use more of it. For a single cage, a small bag of grit and a bag of sand can both last several weeks.
Some birds, especially hens and chicks, benefit from a bedding that also provides a little warmth and cushioning. In that case, a product like Easichick avian bedding may suit better than plain sand.
Decision rules for choosing grit vs sand
- Does your bird eat whole seeds?: If yes, you need grit. Offer an insoluble flint grit such as SkyGold Finest Bird Grit in a separate dish. If your bird eats only pellets or soft foods, grit is optional but still beneficial for natural behaviour. Seed eaters must have grit available at all times.
- What type of housing do you use?: For a cage with a grate, sand on the tray catches droppings and is easy to scoop. For an aviary or floor-level cage, a layer of bird sand provides a comfortable, absorbent surface. For chicks or young birds, consider a specialised bedding like Easichick. Sand suits floor-level housing; grit suits any housing as a supplement.
- Do you need both grit and sand?: Most keepers use both: sand as the substrate and grit in a separate dish. This gives the bird a clean environment and proper digestion. If you choose a combined product, verify that it contains enough insoluble grit for your bird's size. Using both is the safest approach for seed-eating birds.
Product facts at a glance

Which option fits your setup?
Best for
- Seed-eating cage birds (budgies, canaries, finches) that need a daily grit source
- Aviary setups where sand provides a natural floor and grit is offered separately
- Keepers who want a simple two-product system: one grit dish and one sand tray
Not ideal for
- Birds on a fully pelleted diet where grit is less essential (though still safe to offer)
- Small cages where sand changes are impractical; a grate with newspaper may be easier
